Concrete and design: not just a building material
Practicality, solidity and the possibility of customization: concrete likes wallpapers enters our homes as a design object.
Let's talk a little about him
Cement was already known in the times of Assyrians, Egyptians and Greeks and used in the construction of building works. The ancient Romans were the people who made the most of it: roads, masonry and large buildings all arrived to us in really good condition. This material is also indicated by Vitruvius in his De Architettura.
Cement is a very versatile material: it is in fact the basis of many construction mixtures. An example is the mortar, obtained by adding sand. Used as a binder, on the other hand, it creates concrete together with water, gravel and sand. Depending on the structural element to be made with this building material, additives and minerals can then be added to the components we have just mentioned in order to give it certain physical characteristics.
Concrete and design
We all know it as a raw construction material, but in recent years it is becoming increasingly popular even within private homes.
One of the great advantages of this material is the possibility of customization. It can be modeled in a variety of different ways and formats according to needs, making it perfect also for the creation of furnishing accessories. Solidity and practicality are also very important to make our life at home comfortable. Furthermore, a fascinating quality of concrete is its particular texture to the touch: dusty and materially imperfect. We can consider it a neutral element inside the home because of the color, but absolutely with great character as regards everything else.
Nowadays there are really many objects and furnishing accessories in concrete: vases, pen holders, lamps, tables, chairs ... They can certainly be a touch of particularity inside your home!
Very often, this material is joined by others to create stimulating contrasts. We can speak, for example, of glass, steel or wood. The change of texture between one surface and another is always an interesting sensory cue. It is curious to note how, although the specific weight of the material is important, objects made of concrete seem light!
Another way in which concrete is widely used is for kitchen tops. Very practical and easy to clean, it is a perfect ally for those who love order and cleanliness. Try combining it with wooden furniture: you will have a kitchen with natural tones but with a great personality.
Concrete is very well suited to the industrial style very popular in recent years, but it is an extremely versatile material. You can also think of using it in an elegant, minimal, modern, eclectic, country environment ...
