Modern Eastern style: a long-standing trend

texamhome-kata-a1.jpg

Eclectic and versatile, Oriental is a style that has fascinated us since the 18th century. Let's see together where it comes from and how to develop it in our environments today.

Where do the Eastern style come from?

First of all, the term Oriental refers to a period of European art (starting as we said in the eighteenth century) in which Japanese culture and art were a great source of inspiration. This is also due to the fact that in those years Europe had developed an interest in everything that belonged to distant countries. But also thanks to the increasingly close commercial relations between the two geographical areas.

The trend of Oriental style was characterized by the use of images inspired by Japan from the common imagination of the time, with asymmetrical motifs and important contrasts of non-homogeneous scales. The intent was to recreate imitations of traditional japanese porcelain, also through the use of lacquer.

As we said, at that time a real passion for countries geographically far from Europe developed. Both from an anthropological, historical and philosophical-religious point of view. This is why this artistic current was seen as an important cultural exchange between the West and the East, despite the fact that at that time they did not have a clear idea of Japan's geographical position, nor what its territories included. In fact, "Japan" often referred to the generic East Asian region.

In Europe, these were applied widely on various furnishing accessories: carpets, plates, vases, paintings, embroideries, curtains, wall and wood decorations, sculptures ... even some gardens suffered the same influences: pagodas were inserted, pavilions, decorated suspension bridges, up to the point of recreating Japanese natural landscapes.

As for the world of interiors, the style of the eastern merged with the Rococo, to create an opulent style full of details. As happened, for example, inside the Castle of Chantilly with King Louis XV of France or in the queen's boudoir in the Royal Palace of Portici in Naples.

And today?

After the appreciation of past centuries, were gradually set aside.
Today, however, thanks to the rediscovery of tradition, the atmospheres with a "japanese flavor" are once again part of our homes.

How? Both in an overwhelming and important way, and in a soft way and more on tiptoe.

If opulence and chaos (studied and desired) do not scare you, the oriental style for you are those that faithfully reflect the tradition. Atmospheres full of colors, floral motifs, golden touches, figures… All that we can find on traditional Japanese kimonos. So here you can think of inserting vases or plates with important decorations, rather than wallpaper with a strong motif, perhaps branches with delicate flowers or with red and gold tips.

If, on the other hand, you prefer quieter and cleaner environments, but still want to give an oriental touch to your room, you can try the wallpaper depicting settings. In this case, choose softer color tones or different variations of the same hue. The images depicted are of gardens, plants… all in a very soft key, accompanied by abstract accessories and linear furniture.

As for the furniture, we can think of adding touches of chinoiserie both within more linear styles such as japandi or shabby, and as a reinforcement of the personality of more particular styles such as eclectic or ethnic.

What do you think of modern eastern style to transform your interior?
